GPNI: "Decarbonizing Industry" award 2023

We have been awarded this prize for the project we carried out for EUROAPI: drawing up a strategic, technical and economic roadmap for 2030 and 2050, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality and reducing energy and water consumption.

The "Decarbonizing Industry" Award goes to Ekium for the project carried out on behalf of EUROAPI:

Development of a strategic, technical, and economic roadmap for 2030 and 2050 aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and reducing energy and water consumption.

This major award aims to highlight French engineering. For the 2023 edition, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, the Ministry of Energy Transition, and the Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, in partnership with Syntec-lngénierie, are overhauling the competition.

A project in response to today's major climate challenges

Against the backdrop of climate change and the energy crisis, EUROAPI, the world’s second-largest producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients, has committed to an extremely ambitious energy roadmap.

By 2030, the group aims to reduce its fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 30%, achieve 100% renewable electricity, and obtain ISO 14001 and 50001 certification for all of its sites.

To achieve these goals, EUROAPI has enlisted Ekium to support the group on the technical, operational, environmental, and economic aspects of its six European sites. Ekium has partnered with Greenflex to carry out this strategic project.

Analysis of the current situation, site visits, prospective, financial, and technical studies, medium- and long-term roadmap… Our experts worked hard to develop a very concrete and actionable strategic roadmap, with a vision for 2030 and 2050.

In the end, more than 80 energy optimization opportunities were identified and are currently being studied or implemented in Vertolaye (France 63), Elbeuf (France 76), Haverhill (United Kingdom), Frankfurt (Germany), Budapest (Hungary), and Brindisi (Italy). The set of solutions consists of proven tools (process optimization, recovery and utilization of waste heat, biomass boilers, renewable energy, thermal insulation...), but also innovative technological solutions:

  • Vertical wind turbines,

  • Hybrid solar panels,

  • Organic Rankine cycle or organic sludge combustion,

  • Geothermal energy,

  • ...
